During pregnancy, the body will undergo many changes and you will gain weight to accommodate your new baby. While it a natural and necessary process, it may be uncomfortable and stressful especially for first time mothers. It is necessary to be aware of the common pains during pregnancy and at the same it may lead to complications in case of a sharp pain.

Causes of a Sharp Pain During Pregnancy

One of the most common sharp pains that is the stabbing pain that occurs in and around the uterus, abdomen or groin area. Even though it is uncomfortable, in many cases it can be explained as the normal changes that occur during pregnancy.

Some common causes include:

  • Cramping
  • Constipation
  • Gas and Bloating
  • Round Ligament Pain

The above conditions are part of normal pregnancy and they normally don’t cause sharp pain. If the sharp pain experienced is localized on one side, it could be the indicative of an ectopic pregnancy, which is a serious condition that requires urgent medical attention.

A pending miscarriage may also result in a sharp pain from the cramping. This condition raises concerns for expecting mothers to know the difference between normal cramping due to uterus expansion and cramping from a pending miscarriage.

Symptoms for a Sharp Pain During Pregnancy

Despite of the fact that sharp pain can be the result of normal pregnancy change, there are some warning signs or symptoms that one must be aware of in case of any complication.

Some symptoms include:

  • If pain is accompanied by vomiting, heavy bleeding/blood flow, fever, chills or change in vaginal discharge
  • If the pain is continual even after resting or adjusting
  • If the pain makes it difficult to breathe, walk or speak

In case of any of the above symptoms, consult a doctor immediately.

Coping With Sharp Pain During Pregnancy


Some possible solutions that you can try to alleviate the pain includes:

  • Breathing exercises/controlled breathing
  • Pregnancy safe stretches
  • Experiment with sleeping and sitting positions
  • Go on a walk
